As teachers for our youngest students, we help each child grow and develop in a loving, safe and secure environment. We are here to make their first school experience enjoyable while preparing them for the next step in their education. Developing socially, emotionally, spiritually, cognitively and behaviorally are each important aspects of classroom learning. In the 2s-3s classes, students learn what school is and how to behave/learn at school. Teachers set clear expectations, giving grace and encouragement when needed, and redirection/discipline when appropriate.

Socially: Students are encouraged to use their words, make eye contact, take turns, develop empathy and make friends.

Emotionally: Teaching appropriate ways to show their emotion and help to regulate their emotions through example, role- playing and read alouds are effective.

Spiritually: Students learn that they are children of God and that God IS LOVE!

Cognitively: Colors, shapes, letters (sound and recognition), numbers and counting are fun and exciting.

Behaviorally: Listening to teachers, remaining quiet during appropriate times, transitioning from one activity to the next, learning to walk in a line are emphasized.

Teachers encourage and equip each student to do his or her best. That may look a little different for each child. Teachers help develop students’ skills and minds to ensure kindergarten readiness.

Goals for students are:

To be socially engaged by developing active listening; following two or more step directions with a happy heart; talking appropriately with teachers and other students, using words to express feelings, and consistently speaking with kindness.

For children to know that God’s word is truth, that He made many wonderful things, and that God loves each and every one of them, all the time.

To build a confidence in each child that they can succeed. Teachers encourage them to not be afraid to try new things, even if doing this means getting dirty, or making a mess in the process. Theme based, hands-on learning through cooking, crafting, playing, and STEM activities provide means for exploration and mastery.

To enhance student’s curiosity and love of learning. Teachers guide students to make sure they have correct hand grip on their pencil, crayon, marker etc. while emphasizing letter recognition and writing the alphabet. Students learn phonics and how to write their name independently. Recognizing & writing numbers 1-10, rote counting on the calendar 1-31 in English and Spanish, counting by 5s & 10s to 100. Mastery of colors and shapes.

PreK students form friendships and become a little community of their own. Compassion, teamwork and helpfulness are taught through example and narrative. SonShine is grateful to share in their learning experiences.
